This guide is meant to help you understand everything that is available to you throughout your journey — what the program entails and how to use the app.

What are my next steps?

  1. If you haven’t already, download the Pelago app from your app store. The app will be used for your entire journey.

  2. Enable Notifications from the Pelago App in your phone settings (instructions below in App Guide)

  3. Become familiar with the App:

    1. Add your personal goals, set your intentions, and begin to understand your patterns, habits, and triggers

    2. Begin tracking by checking-into the app everyday

    3. Read through the content in the Library Packs and utilize our tools as needed

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can help with the difficult withdrawal symptoms and cravings that most people say is their only reason for not giving up tobacco. Using NRT reduces those symptoms.

The two forms of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) offered by Pelago are:

  • Patches

  • Gum

What is nicotine gum?

Nicotine gum is an over-the-counter, medicated chewing gum that delivers a dose of nicotine orally. It’s intended to replace the nicotine that people would otherwise get from smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products.

It’s a scientifically tested product, and research shows that it can be very effective as a quit smoking aid. However, it’s important to note that the reasons for taking up smoking and maintaining the habit are complex, and the addiction to nicotine is only one part of the problem.

What are nicotine patches?

A nicotine patch is a form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), designed to help people quit smoking. It’s a transdermal patch, meaning it delivers a specific amount of nicotine through the skin and into the bloodstream, once applied.

Although all NRTs deliver nicotine to the brain at a slower rate than cigarettes, the release of nicotine from patches is the slowest of all NRT products. Rather than providing a ‘quick hit’ of nicotine in the way that some other products do, nicotine patches are designed to provide the body with a steady supply of nicotine throughout the day and in most cases, throughout the night too.


AT&T Surcharge Information

Surcharge requirements take a minimum of 6 weeks to complete and must be completed by June 30th to have the surcharge removed for the current year.

If surcharge requirements are completed after July 1 through December 31, the surcharge can no longer be removed for the current calendar year but will be removed for the upcoming year (effective January 1st).

Surcharge Program Requirements include:

  • Complete “Essentials 1” in the app (found in the Library)

  • Completing six weekly check-in’s/logs (at least 1 per week, minimum of six weeks to complete)

Essentials 1 Explained:

  • Essentials 1 can be found in the Library section of the app under "Packs"

  • Essentials 1 consist of 12 mini courses that you can tap to listen or read through

  • Each session can be anywhere from 1-8 minutes long to complete

Check In's Explained:

  • A check-in can be completed by a manual Diary Entry, Vaping Log, or by answering the daily question that states, "Did you smoke yesterday?"

  • If your Quit Date is set to a future date, you can only complete a check-in by manually logging a Diary Entry or a Vaping Log in the My Progress section of the app. This will allow you to log when you've smoked and what triggered this action. Logging this information will be considered a "check-in."

  • If your Quit Date has passed or you have already quit, you can complete a check-in by answering the prompt in the Home screen that states - "Did you smoke yesterday?" and follow the steps to log this action. If you have allowed Pelago to send you notifications, you will receive a push notification everyday with a reminder to answer this prompt


Surcharge FAQ’s

  • How will AT&T/Alight know when I have completed the requirements?

    Pelago sends monthly reports (on the 20th of each month) directly to your Benefits Administrator once you've met AT&T's requirements in the app. Please note, Alight/AT&T processing times vary and it can take 4-6 weeks to see any changes.

  • Do I need to be smoke-free to complete the program?

    No, you do not have to be smoke-free for completion. Pelago sends completion reports once surcharge requirements are met, not when the member reports that they have quit.

App Troubleshooting Tips + Tricks

  • Ensure the app is always updated to the latest version available. If your smartphone is not set up to perform updates automatically, you will need to manually update the app by going into your app store, search for "Pelago" and there will be a button labeled "UPDATE." Tap the button to update the app.

  • Always try closing and relaunching the app.
